About Dr. Romie
Dr. Romila “Romie” Mushtaq, M.D., ABIHM, is a neurologist, mindfulness teacher, sought out keynote speaker, and never-to-recover chocolate addict. She is the first Chief Wellness Officer for a corporation of 5,000+ employees in the United States (Evolution Hospitality), integrative medicine specialist, and mindfulness expert who has impacted over 1.1 million lives across the world through her keynotes and corporate workshops on mindfulness and brain health.
Dr. Romie entered neurology at a time when less than 5% of neurologists were women. After reaching the pinnacle of “success” while working 80-100hr weeks and achieving her career milestones, she developed a rare, nearly-lethal health disorder. This experience sparked a shift towards mindfulness, meditation, and integrative medicine and led to her current path of shifting the minds of Fortune 500 leaders, organizations, and corporations through science-based meditation talks and workshops.
With nearly 20 years of expertise and her signature style, energy, and sass, Dr. Romie delivers dynamic corporate wellness keynotes and workshops, corporate leadership lectures, and business wellness consulting. She is an in-demand speaker with a popular TedX talk on “The Powerful Secret of Your Breath” and she is featured in NBC, Fox Business, Inc, CBS, Huffington Post, NPR, and dozens of other national media outlets. Dr. Romie has worked with Grammy-award winning musicians, top NBA/NFL/PGA athletes, and Fortune 500 company executives.
The Full Romie Story
Born into an Asian family in the small Midwestern town of Danville, Illinois, Dr. Romie is the proud daughter of immigrants and a hard-working product of the US public school system. From a young age, she showed all the signs of entering a STEM career–growing up with a tribe of brothers, playing with toy trucks and building blocks over Barbie dolls, and being captain of the speech and debate team for three years.
She was always a talker. When she talked too much, her mom would make her read the encyclopedia and reward her with chocolate (fun fact–reading and chocolate are still two of her favorite things).
Dr. Romie ended up pursuing a long and fulfilling career as a physician and neurologist. She completed her medical training at the Medical University of South Carolina, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, and the University of Michigan.
At a time when less than 5% of neuroscientists were women, Dr. Romie worked her way up in a male-dominated industry and built her career as a neurologist, neurophysiologist, and epilepsy specialist.
However, like many leaders and executives, she achieved success with too much stress. Pulling the 80-100 hour work weeks resulted in sleep deprivation, physical illness, brain fog, and eventually career burnout.
Everything changed in 2009 – she was diagnosed with a rare medical disorder that became life-threatening and required urgent surgery. This near-death and career-shifting experience completely rocked her world. It led to prolonged soul-searching, life-purpose questioning, and the understanding that too many leaders and CEOS were successful, but stressed and burnt out.
After well-needed rest time with family, she finally listened to the wisdom of her elders and found a path to mindfulness-based techniques, meditation, and integrative medicine healing modalities. This led to her traveling across the world to heal personally, learning to stop the stress-success cycle, and achieving a new level of calm and ability to thrive.
In 2013, she received a medical degree in Integrative Medicine — fusing her 2 decades of being a brain physician with Eastern healing modalities, techniques, and meditation/mindfulness disciplines.
Now, Dr. Romie’s mission is to shift the state of brain health in our organizations and our leaders — and do it with signature Romie style, engaging workshops and keynotes, and passionate, actionable teachings.
As the first Chief Wellness Officer for a 5,000+ person corporation in the hospitality space, Evolution Hospitality, Dr. Romie is proving that a Brain Shift can be made at all levels of business and positively impact the work space. At Evo Hospitality, she is implementing wellness and mindfulness practices across the employee spectrum –from CEO to intern– with practical and proven methods to increase brain health and create a calm consciousness (leading to more productive and happy workspaces).
Outside of serving her mission, Dr. Romie loves to travel the world locations where she can disconnect from digital devices, visit family and her “sistasquad” friends, play with her dog, Rahja, and find new recipes for her Instapot.
